The Department of Basic Sciences of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine consists of five divisions that carry out educational activities in a synchronized manner: Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Histology and Embryology, and History of Veterinary Medicine and Deontology.
Our
department currently has a total of seven faculty members—five professors and
two associate professors - as well as one research assistant who conduct
educational and instructional activities. Our academic staff is composed of
research- and education-oriented scholars who value interdisciplinary
collaboration and are experts in their respective fields.
In
addition to contributing to the undergraduate veterinary curriculum within our
faculty, our faculty members also provide academic support to the Faculty of
Health Sciences within our university and conduct graduate-level education and
training activities in various departments affiliated with the Institute of
Health Sciences.
Contribution
to Education
The
theoretical and practical courses offered during the early years within the
Department of Basic Sciences constitute the first and fundamental stage of
veterinary medical education. Through these courses, students acquire the
scientific and professional foundations they will need in subsequent years.
Students
are equipped with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for
professional courses offered in the Departments of Preclinical Sciences,
Clinical Sciences, Animal Science and Nutrition, and Food Hygiene and
Technology. These courses lay the groundwork for developing scientific and
professional competencies such as examining potential clinical cases
encountered in professional practice, interpreting examination and laboratory
data, and diagnosing and treating cases based on these findings.
Metabolic
activities within the cell, the mechanisms of action of enzymes and hormones,
and all fundamental biological reactions necessary for sustaining life are
grounded in the professional knowledge taught in the theoretical and practical
courses of the Department of Basic Sciences.
In
these courses, students are taught the history of the veterinary profession,
its ethical values, and the legal responsibilities of veterinarians. The bones,
muscles, joints, organs, and all other body structures of various animal
species are examined at the macroscopic level. Through cadaver studies, the
three-dimensional structure of the living animal body is taught, and the
fundamental macroscopic anatomical knowledge required for clinical examinations
and surgical procedures is conveyed both theoretically and practically.
The
microscopic structure of various cells and tissues, the developmental processes
of tissues and organs from a single-celled zygote, the functional principles of
organs, and how the organs and systems forming the organism work in integration
and synchrony with one another are explained using visual and auditory
educational methods.
Students
are also taught the application methods of parameters used in blood and urine
analyses for diagnosing various diseases, the interpretation of analysis
results, and their clinical significance. Indeed, it is impossible for a
veterinarian who does not understand the normal structural characteristics and
functional principles of cells, tissues, organs, and systems to recognize their
“abnormal states” (diseases) and make accurate diagnoses.

The
primary objectives of the Basic Sciences courses for students are:
- Providing a Fundamental Scientific
Foundation: To present the core concepts of
biological sciences related to animal health in accordance with universal
scientific standards.
- Establishing a Research Culture:
To emphasize the importance of research activities and to educate
veterinarians or researchers who possess laboratory discipline.
- Innovation:
To train veterinarians or researchers capable of interpreting and
developing new diagnostic and treatment methods by utilizing the
scientific literature.

Students
who successfully complete the Basic Sciences courses are expected to achieve

- Systematic Knowledge:
Distinguishes anatomical and physiological differences among animal
species.

Evaluates disruptions in metabolic processes based on biochemical data.
- Microscopic Assessment:
Recognizes tissue and cellular structures and acquires the foundation to
detect pathological changes.
- Clinical Readiness:
Integrates foundational scientific knowledge with clinical disciplines
such as internal medicine, surgery, and gynecology to develop practical
solutions.

Resolves ethical dilemmas in professional practice and demonstrates
command of relevant legal regulations.
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine educates veterinarians who provide breeding, preventive, and therapeutic healthcare services for various domestic, wild, and exotic animal species; who understand the importance of food safety and public health; who take measures to protect animal and human health; and who embrace the universal principles of science and ethics in the practice of their profession.
